Seva Safari
The Word Seva is closely related to the Kinyarwanda word “Umuganda” As Aguka means expand, in Aguka Wellness Center we have adopted Seva as a tool to expand our heart by being of service to others.
Seva is a Sanskrit word that describes the act of selfless service.
Seva is an act of compassion and care for others above oneself. The Bhagavad Gita, encourages selfless service as a way to develop spiritually; thus, it is closely linked to the concept of Karma yoga (yoga of purifying one’s action). Unlike other forms of yoga which may focus on performing poses to transform the physical body, performing seva is said to transform the personality.
Performing seva may be a challenging task as it may raise personal difficulties for the people doing it. They may discover their own aversions to certain aspects of the work. However, through mindful awareness of these challenges, seva can be a powerful tool for people to learn more about themselves, their personalities and the patterns of behavior or thought that are no longer serving them. In this way, performing seva can be a form of personal and spiritual development.
Safari is a Kiswahili word which means any recreational journey or expedition. In our yearly seva safari, we choose one or more than one local persons that we will compassionately take care of as part of our karma yoga by building or renovating their houses; by helping them to finish the unfinished work in the farm. It is at the same time a recreational journey because beside practicing breath-body-mind, yoga and qigong with the beneficiaries of our selfless service, we will also have time to visit around one or more of the historical touristic sites in the country.
